Yes TBA opened this week, go see that (Alex Mackin Dolan and AL Steiner and Anna Craycroft are three good vis art bets) but while you are out and about here are some other events that are also worthy of attention.
Katie Steinberg
Friday the 13th couldn't be a better day to have an opening reception for Feardom by Colin Manning and Katie Steinberg at Gallery Homeland. Steinberg creates weapons rendered in delicate even precious materials. For example the show features a 4 foot long pearl cannon and uzi's rendered in a Frank Lloyd Wright-ish stained glass prairie style stained glass. Seems incredibly appropriate as Syria's civil war threatens to involve the rest of the world. Manning applies collage and filmic techniques to create unsettling transparent layers that have a nightmare-like quality. Both artists are based in Portland part of the time.
Projection performance by Colin Manning as well.
Opening Reception: Friday the 13th | 7-11PM
Gallery Homeland | 2505 SE 11th
Erik Stotik's Untitled
On Saturday the 14th Eric Stotik is giving a talk on his latest and largest work to date at Laura Russo Gallery. Two years ago he won the RACC Fellowship in the visual arts which facilitated this 5 foot high and 45 foot long work full of his often terrifying imagery. Always good to see an excellent artist speak about what may be their masterwork. It is certainly his most ambitious work to date.
Artist Talk: Saturday September 14th | 11:00 AM
Laura Russo Gallery | 805 NW 21st
drawing by Anselm Hook's Mom
Anselm Hook is doing things that make everything else seem comparatively sane. How so? Well, he wants your help in constructing an android baby. That's right, he's not fighting the maternal urge, he's hacking it.
Here's the PR: "Artists, geeks, foodies, musicians. Eat, drink, and talk about what it takes to build an artificially intelligent sentient being. Bring your ideas, your maternal instincts, your code, snacks, knitting, music, warmth, and wisdom to our Sunday table. this may require more than just markov chains and computer vision - it may call for intuition, psychology, ethics, mechanical engineering, pureed carrots, nap-time - who knows! Together we will begin the process of creating a life. Let's try do something NP hard! And remember: when the AI revolution comes if you're not part of the solution you're part of the precipitate."
