First Thursday Picks July 2010

lambrecht-lichtenstein.jpg
Laurie Lambrecht

Blue Sky presents Laurie Lambrecht's From the Studio of Roy Lichtenstein. "Photographer Laurie Lambrecht was Roy Lichtenstein's part-time assistant from 1990 to 1992... Encouraged by Lichtenstein, she began taking photographs in his studio as they worked together. The two artists grew close over this period of time as Lambrecht's photographic project became a collaborative one. Lambrecht's vivid color images give us a rare glimpse into the working studio of one of the twentieth-century's most iconic artists."

Opening reception • 6-9pm • July 1
Blue Sky Gallery • 122 NW 8th • 503.225.0210

Mel Katz

Veteran sculptor Mel Katz continues his always evolving exploration of shape and contour. Starting with the drawn line, he translates his ideas into sculptural objects that expolore concepts of two and three dimensional space. This show features wall sculptures made of machine cut, anodized aluminum. According to PORT's founder Jeff Jahn, "perhaps no area artist deserves a full museum retrospective more than Mel Katz."

Opening reception • 5-8pm • July 1
Laura Russo Gallery • 805 NW 21st • 503.226.2754

AGRP-Modular-Mondrian-Block-Set.jpg
Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen, "Modular Mondrian Block Set"

PDX Contemporary presents Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen's In the Classroom, "a new body of work that deals with the politics and aesthetics of education...With the current inflation of people pursuing higher education, despite its mounting cost, increased privatization and decreased rigor, it seems particularly appropriate to portray the classroom transparently as a place of commerce." Lectures will be presented throughout the exhibition - see the show page for the schedule.

Opening reception • 5-8pm • July 1
PDX Contemporary • 925 NW Flanders • 503.222.0063

The exhibition of selected prints from the collection of art collector Jordan Schnitzer features work by Ellsworth Kelly, John Baldessari, Dan Flavin, Richard Serra, Robert Gober, and many others. The show was curated by Master Printer James Reid who visited Portland as a PNCA/Cyan PDX Cultural Resident.

Calvin-Ross-Carl_purplemountains.jpg
Calvin Ross Carl

Half/Dozen presents Calvin Ross Carl's Purple Mountains Majesty, which "seeks logical and structured interpretations of a world identified as unstable...The exhibition's formalist aesthetics serve as an allegory for the oppressive, dehumanizing nature of the workplace and its economic woes."
