China Urban opens this week at Reed's Cooley Gallery. This exhibition of contemporary Chinese art "explores the historical and
contemporary Chinese city - as representation, model, catalyst, and socio-political construct." Before the reception begins, calligrapher Dr. Yang Jiyu will enact a public performance of the calligraphy of Hong Kong artist Tsang Tsou Choi (1921-2007) - the "King of Kowloon" - on the glass walls of the gallery. PAM's artist talk series continues this Thursday with a lecture by painter Michael Knutson. Knutson has studied and produced geometric abstract paintings for over 30 years. He is a member of Blackfish Gallery, and teaches in the Reed College art department. Knutson will discuss two seventeenth-century landscape paintings,
The Shrines of Itsukushima and Wakanoura by an unknown Japanese artist, and
Mercury and Herse by French painter Thomas Blanchet. The talk departs from the Hoffman Lobby entrance, and continues with happy hour in the lobby until 8pm.
