Details of (PORT's own) Jeff Jahn's latest curatorial concoction have begun to emerge. Organism's nascent aesthetic is one of hyperconnectivity and rampant lateral growth in which different genres and ideas freely intertwine, following the model of neurons forming new and unexpected synaptic connections. For instance, in it's launch event, it creates an interchange between Rock Stars like Courtney Taylor-Taylor of The Dandy Warhols, and video art by Pipilotti Rist.
As described by the curator:
"Organism is adapted to visual culture and there is a place for design, science, ecology, architecture, very visually oriented music and even advertising in its focus. Yet everything will come back to contemporary art, this is an applied evolution of Superflat.
Organism was conceived as a 21st century art institution... the word references scientific nomenclature and implies a sense of growth. Organism is designed to serve and challenge its audience in Portland while creating something unique and on the cusp enough to be worthy of note elsewhere. Portland can only gain renown by being innovative and very forward thinking, the upshot of this is if you innovate it actually is less financially taxing.
Organism is scaled appropriately to where Portland is right now and has an international outlook.
One of Organism's chief goals is providing outside curators an opportunity to realize exciting projects in Portland. Having these people working for a short time in Portland can make a huge impact.
Organism in addition to being membership driven and patron supported has a number of very innovative fundraising ideas. The inaugural
Introducing Organism event is just one such example."
